Feast of Hammers… begins…

Dearest Birds,

It has come to my attention that some very exciting things are about to happen…and some of you may not yet be informed!

First and foremost, our NEW SINGLE – ‘Through Ten Walls’, is a-coming. The video is out on Monday. That’s like, 7 days so you haven’t got long to wait. Check out a still here:

This will be the first song off the new record ‘Feast of Hammers’ which we recorded with JASON RUBAL back in February. Read more about him and us here. It is going to be different. And epic. And shiny. Prepare yourselves.

So anyway, we’re going to need all the help we can get to put this record out, so please feel free to share, post, blog, talk about us wherever possible! If you think you can help us by blogging, writing, taking pictures, or doing artwork or ANYTHING else, please please please get in touch, we would love to chat to you :)

Next on the list-of-happening-things, we play with the amazing JASON WEBLEY at the end of the month in Brighton at The Green Door Store, 26th Aug. You can buy tickets here. It will be epic. Oh so epic.

We are also very excited to have been asked to be part of ‘A Dark Cabaret 2′ compilation from Projekt Records! It’s now available on Amazon here, and looks a bit like this:

Finally, we’ve been whoring ourselves all over the internet! Each of us have a tumblr blog now so if you’d like to get up-close-and-personal with any member of the band (be warned, we swear A LOT) then you can check us out here:

That is all for now. We’ll be in touch again when the new video is ready for your viewing pleasure…

Love & Feathers,

Birdeatsbaby x x

Secret Garden Party oh my

Well. I’m fiiiiiinally starting to feel a little bit more normal (and by normal I mean not shaking and shuddering and dropping things all over the place). We survived another weekend up in Huntingdon, Cambridge with the crazy people who do the Secret Garden party every year – and MY GOD they know how to party.

Costume wise we decided to keep it simple and go as skeletons – it tends to work pretty well with our music, and it’s fun to scare people too. Below are some photos from our weekend…

Keely and Garry drinking in the morning sun. At this point we had still not been to bed. And this was Thursday.

Crazy people running around with giant balloons. One of the many trippy things you might see at SGP.

I met a girl another lady with orange hair. She rocked. We had the same piercings and hair. Very surreal, I had to take a picture to know it actually happened!

Us onstage at the Feast of Fools, Saturday evening… we had an awesome crowd, I especially loved the mosh-pit of one, and wish we had that on film!

The boys in the band.

and of course, the girls.

See you all next year x x x x

News from the nest… great things are happening

Hello birds…

So much has been happening recently at the Nest – we’re completely rushed off our feet driving up and down the country, all in the name of art!

First and foremost we must mention that our next gig (with the mighty Belladonna) is happening on SUNDAY. This is at London’s Purple Turtle and is only £5, you can get tickets HERE. Come along, bring friends and cameras! And for those of you who are worried about getting home, the show WILL finish well before the last tube :)

Yesterday we finished filming our next music video which is for a completely new song. We can reveal now that first single, ‘Through Ten Walls’ from our new record Feast of Hammers (read about how we made that record with Jason Rubal here) will be out on 5th September as a free download – that’s right we’re damn good to you. Here’s a sneaky picture of Keely on set doing her thing:

However if you can’t wait that long, here’s a little treat for you all… we’ve been filming some special acoustic sessions at The Nest with Si from the Brighton Bandstand. The first of these is now up on our YouTube Channel for viewing! Thank you for all your suggestions for covers, the rest will be out soon! Please also visit Si’s other project HERE and show your love!

Our new album ‘Feast of Hammers’… the story so far

Dearest birds,

As you may know, we recently spent some time in the big ole USA. We may have mentioned it a couple of times…. ahem. We’re still absolutely buzzing from the experience, so we thought we’d explain exactly why, and what it means for the future of Birdeatsbaby…

We have had most of the songs on our new album for a while but have not really been playing them at shows. This is because we’ve been not-so-quietly plotting something big for quite some time.

Last year we had the opportunity to talk with Jason Rubal, a world-famous producer with a very specific specialty…he is known for making abstract, minimal and dark records. Birdeatsbaby minimal? Not exactly. But we really got along from the start and once we started talking about our music, we realised what similar ideas we had about how our big record should sound.

In November of last year Jason (and Roy who works with Jason) flew over to work with us on our arrangements. It was quite a learning experience and gave us a new perspective on how to look at songwriting.

Early in 2011 we flew to America to go into production on this record. We played a few shows while we were there (you’ve probably seen the incriminating photos, if not… here they are), met some amazing people, and made some great friends along the way. We worked every day for weeks on this record. It was an experience unlike anything we have ever done before.  A lot of blood, sweat, tears, and malt liquor went into it.

We have put all of our confidence into this record and are very excited to have this be our biggest, boldest step yet. We could not be more proud.

Expect very new, different and exciting things on this record. All we can really say is that is the most artsy and bold album we could push ourselves to make.

Wait patiently, it will be out before you know it, then… LET THE MAYHEM COMMENCE…again!

Stripper and Guns… oh and a new album! God Bless America.

Dear birds,

It’s about bloody time we blogged about what’s been going on in bird-land…as there has been LOTS happening!

This last month of March (and some of February too) has been the most exciting and amazing time we’ve had as a band so far. In case you haven’t been keeping up with the bird news (now honestly wtf where have you been?), we have been out in America for some time MAKING THE NEW ALBUM. It has been an incredible (and somewhat drunken) experience with the awesome Jason Rubal at his beautiful studio, Seventh Wave in Harrisburg, PA. We stayed there for 3 weeks, tirelessly working day and night ;) to make this wonderful album for you guys! We’ve decided to call ‘Feast of Hammers’. It won’t be out for a while yet… but we promise you it fucking rocks. Expect amazingness!

Before that we were gallivanting along the East Coast playing shows with This Way To The Egress and our very own Mister Joe Black. It was incredible. It was emotional. In a good way. We are very grateful to TWTTE for lending us their musical instruments, giving us places to sleep and being so lovely to us. THANK YOU :)

For those of you on the North, South, West Coast and in between states…we are planning to return roughly this time next year for a more extensive tour so please do not be sad we didn’t make it over to you this time for we shall return :)

Right! Rather than rambling through the entire tour/recording we will just name some new life experiences we have gained since being in America: We drove through a snow storm, drank neat Gin, ate $25 steak, adopted a flamingo (and named it Spencer), partied with a Harvard professor, fired guns, met strippers, consumed several cases of Colt 45 and discovered Hershey’s Sweet Sweet World of Chocolate. Just to name a few. All the good stuff that rock stars should really do! To see em all, go to our facebook page and have a gander through the pics! Here’s just a few for now…expect a video soon too…

On stage in Vermont

Charlie shows Ronald exactly how much he loves the Big Mac.

This is Ruth who we stayed with in Boston. She gave us LOTS of tequila :D

Entering New York with excitment…

central New York City, enjoying the sun and trying not to stand out as tourists. Fail.

Keely gets serious. Don’t fuck with the birds.

American Peanut-butter-and-chocolate cupcakes. If you love us, you will make these and bring them to our shows. PLEASE!

Jason and Garry throw down a few Troeg’s at the Brewery…

Keely chooses the $15,000 dollar violin of her dreams for the record…

…and Mish plays a baby grand (many many thanks to Sherri Mullen)

Garry opens beers the American way!

Just before we left to go home Jason and his lovely wife Michelle took us to a proper American diner for one last feed.

Thank you to everyone who helped us along this wonderous journey. We will never forget it.

Love, Mishkin, Keely, Garry and Charlie x x x

Rosary music video is out now… and we hear America calling!

Why hello there beautiful birdies!!!

Things are VERY exciting at Nest HQ these days… we’re mere days away from flapping our wings across the pond to the big ole land of AMERICA. Playing shows in Montpeiler (VT), Boston, New York and New Jersey is enough to make us jump up and down and go EEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!! Ahem. We will try to contain ourselves till then as I’m in danger of blowing a fuse. On tour we are joined by the wondeful This Way To The Egress and long time buddy Mister Joe Black (who we toured with previously. and drew on his face as he slept. he may not like us very much) – you can view all the details up here.

After touring, we go to record our new album with the legendary Jason Rubal. Oh yes. This means MORE birdeatsbaby music is on the way!! We will keep you updated on the recording while we’re out there so make sure you’re on our facebook, twitter and the birdeatsbaby forum. Hopefully we’ll have some video diaries up too!

Before we shoot off however, we do have a treat for you… a new music video! Created by the lovely people at Second Mouse Media – big thanks to Dom, Kelly and Tom for this. So, without further ado… we present… ROSARY

Philippa flies the Nest… bon voyage oh awesome drum lady :(

Dear Birdies,

Some of you may know this already but to most I’m sure this comes as a big surprise….

Yes, the rumours are true, Philippa B is leaving the flock to pursue full-time career in film. As I’m sure you all know, she is very talented in this area, having made all our music videos… and some other nifty ones too.

‘Phil-the-Shirt Bloomers’ has been with us since the very, very beginning, back when it was just Mish (who had a shaved head back then), writing strange songs together in student digs and shyly performing in dives all over Brighton. She has helped create the image of this band, done all our beautiful artwork and photos, as well as tirelessly bashed the drums. She will be missed terribly!

However… although this is heart-breaking, it does mean that she now has more time to help us make more music videos, so we will still be seeing her on many Birdeatsbaby photo shoots, videos and general drunken get-togethers!

In tribute to her leaving, we’ve selected some of the best (and worst) pictures from her time with us. Enjoy. And cry a little. We did.

You can stay in touch with Philippa by checking her website and blog here… http://www.philippabloomfield.com/

We love you Pinny x x x x x

PHILIPPA: A LIFE IN BIRDEATSBABY

Halloween 2008. Zombie prom Queens of course!

Philippa gets far too excited about the Eurotunnel on tour…

…and due to the language barrier managed to order 7 coffees by accident!

Our first ever themed phot shoot (all Phil’s idea of course!)

Looking classy on the set of ‘Hang Myself’ video shoot

Philippa and Mish sample twinkies in America with horrifying results! YUK.

Her dedication for selling merch knew no bounds…

Posing as the March Hare for our Alice in Wonderland photo shoot

…and doing what she does best.

We’ll miss you Philippa x x x x

Merry Christmas from le birds… have a free track on us!

Ho ho ho birdies!

Too cold to go outside? Contemplating braving the snow for a trip to the pub? Fuck that. Stay in and listen to our newest track ‘Lullaby’ which we recorded whilst on tour this year… and here’s the story behind it:

This is Bart.

This is us hugging Bart. He looks uncomfortable.

Here is his studio in Landbouwbelang, Maastricht.

He made it himself. It is amazing.
Whilst we we on tour this October he very kindly recorded and produced a single for us, entitled ‘Lullaby’. It’s a dark little country song we wrote the last time we were on tour… and now it is yours.

Now for the juicy part…. we are GIVING IT AWAY FOR FREE HERE. Happy Christmas from us!

There is an option should you wish to donate – anything you give (and please don’t feel obliged to) will go to Crisis at Christmas during the festive season. And please be sure to visit Bart’s website, and tell him how awesome he is! And check out the LBB where he lives too.

We would also like to thank YOU, dear birds, for all the support you’ve given us in 2010, it has been an amazing year.

Here are some of our favorite moments…

In February we made our third music video, for ‘I Always Hang Myself With The Same Rope’, if you haven’t seen it, WHYYYYYY NOT? Watch it now.

(us on set at the video shoot in January)

Later in the year we were lucky enough to record with Sir Marc R Norris (warning – this man is not actually a knight, no matter what he tells you) on our latest EP ‘Bigger Teeth’. It’s available here

(Mishkin and Marc at the studio)

At the Secret Garden Party we owned the Feast of Fools stage with our zombie soldier costumes…

In October we toured Europe with Bitter Ruin… and much fun was had… as you can clearly see here!

(Jesus joined the party in Holland)

(rocking out in Paris)

In November we met up and had pre-production fun with Jason Rubal and Roy Nash. We will be recording with them in Pennsylvania in March 2011 for our new album. Yes, NEW ALBUM. Can I please have a hell yeah?

(warming up before a night out with Jason… lunging is by far the best ‘pre-drinking’ exercise.)

In December we were interviewed by Tom Robinson from 6 Music, and Joel Hajioff from Total Rock Radio, wahey! If anyone has a recording of the TTR interview we would love a copy! (email band@birdeatsbaby.co.uk)

(Here’s Mish failing to look cool in the 6 Music Hub)

Stay tuned for the new year, we have some big news and much more goings on. Catch us first at Joe Black’s launch party on the 17th January @ Kings Theatre, Portsmouth.

Till then, Happy Holidays! Drink and be merry, we certainly will be!

J’adores it.
